California's 36th Congressional District Special Election, 2011

The 2011 special election in California's 36th congressional district was held on July 12, 2011. Democrat Janice Hahn won the Special Election that was held to fill the vacancy after the resignation of incumbent Jane Harman who resigned on February 28, 2011. Harman resigned to leave to Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars as its head.

The Special Primary Election was held on May 17, 2011. As no candidate has received more than 50% of the voters in the primary election, the general election will be held between the top two vote recipients irrespective of the parties they represent. Democrat Janice Hahn and Republican Craig Huey took the top two places in the primaries and will contest in the special general election.


Unofficial results show that Democrat Janice Hahn has won 54.6% of the votes polled, while Republican Craig Huey received 45.4% of the votes.

July 11, 2011: Democrat Janice Hahn's campaign suffers a shock with the death of her 86-year-old mother, one day before the election.

July 5, 2011: Democrat Janice Hahn who is a Los Angeles City Councilwoman uses TV Ads to project herself as one who has never held partisan office. The announcer in one of her TV ad says "Janice Hahn is different. A local city councilwoman who has never held partisan office, Janice Hahn will fight for our agenda. A real plan to create green jobs in our communities, take on Washington spending, make the right cuts while protecting Medicare,"

June 30, 2011: Janice Hahn's campaign raised $673,943 in the second quarter. Republican Craig Huey's campaign raised $323,015, out of which $195,000 came from a loan made to his campaign.
