Herman Cain Timeline

August 2011

August 14: Herman Cain decides to continue his presidential campaign after coming fifth in the Ames Straw Poll. Cain speaks to CNN's Candy Crowley.

Cain says that he will continue his campaign

“I run a campaign like a business. We don’t allow the spending to get out ahead of the revenue … and we’re still able to be very effective. We’re not making huge gambles on spending before we get the money. Because of the grassroots nature of my campaign and because of the way people are connecting with my message, [the campaign] continues to gradually build. It doesn’t have these ups and downs and these ebbs and flows - like some of these other campaigns - if you’re dependent on moving it with the media. No, we’re moving it with message,”

Speculating why Tim Pawlenty ended his campaign

“He made a big investment and he doubled down and didn’t pull it off. He probably ended up with some debt and so he didn’t finish higher…it will be more difficult for him to raise money, so I believe that’s probably it.”

August 13: Herman Cain comes fifth in the Ames Straw Poll. He received 1456 votes (8.56%). His campaign said that though Herman Cain wanted to come at least third in the Straw Poll, he is excited and will continue his presidential campaign.

I am truly sorry for any comments that may have betrayed any commitment to the U.S. Constitution and the freedom of religion guaranteed by it."

July 21: Herman Cain dismissed fellow GOP presidential contender Michele Bachmann's migraines an issue.

Herman Cain says Bachmann's migraines an issue

"If she's showing up for her events, and she's doing what she needs to do as a United States congresswoman, people shouldn't worry about her migraines. My wife has migraine headaches. I understand migraines. So I just think it's a non-issue."

Herman Cain compared Michele Bachmann's migraines to his cancer. He said that though he is cancer free for the past five years, he monitors his health closely. "I get a written statement from my doctor tomorrow such that it won't be an issue. People sometimes are chasing shadows rather than, what you going to do about foreign affairs, economy? ... Let's focus on the big stuff."

July 18: Herman Cain said that Mitt Romney will not be able to defeat President Barack Obama in the 2012 Presidential Election. He said that his prediction comes from Mitt Romney's 'RomneyCare' law he signed as governor of Massachusetts five years ago. Cain also said that Romney was unable to explain his Mormon religion during his 2008 presidential campaign.

"When he ran the first time, he did not do a good job of communicating his religion. Unfortunately, it doesn't bother me, but I do know that it's an issue with a lot of southerners." "You don't win South Carolina, Florida and Georgia, you can't with the nomination, and then you can't win the presidency,"

July 17: Herman Cain says that he is more qualified and experienced than another GOP presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann. "The choice is real simple, My entire career has been problem-solving, not politics.". He said that he also expects to finish in the top three in the crucial Ames Straw Poll in August. However, he says that he won't drop out of the race if he doesn't finish in the top three. "The nomination process doesn't stop with the early caucuses only. The biggest determining factor as to whether I stay in or drop out won't be whether I finish first, second, or third, or fourth. It's going to be the number of supporters that we're getting, and what we are hearing from the people actually out there in the states."

Communities should be able to oppose mosque construction
Herman Cain said that communities in the US should be allowed to oppose construction of mosques in their neighborhood and should not be viewed as religious discrimination. "Our Constitution guarantees separation of church and state. Islam combines church and state. They are using the church part of our First Amendment to infuse their mosque in that community and the people in the community do not like it, they disagree with it.", he said. "I'm simply saying I owe it to the American people to be cautious because terrorists are trying to kill us, So yes, I'm going to err on the side of caution, rather than the side of carelessness."

July 5: Herman Cain appoints new staff in Iowa. Larry Tuel will serve as state director and Lisa Lockwood, Zach Dalluge and Steven Hensler will serve as field staff. "I'm in the top tier, now... If it were not for social media, the Internet, and if I were not for the Tea Party citizen movement, I wouldn't have a chance.... In a few months I'll be able to say to ABC, CBS and NBC, 'Can you hear me now?'."

June 28: Herman Cain releases a press statement that he will release an autobiographical book titled ""Who Is Herman Cain?" in the fall. The book is being published by Threshold Editions, a Simon & Schuster imprint.

But throughout it all, I have known that with a belief in God, a belief in yourself and a belief in the greatest country in the world, anything is possible,” Cain said. “Win-win relationships are what you look for in business, and that is what I look forward to having with Threshold Editions.”
