Nursultan Nazarbayev is the President of Kazakhstan ever since the country got its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. He is the longest serving ex-Soviet President. On February 4, 2011, he called for an early snap presidential elections putting an end to his term 20 months before its expiry. He announced he will be standing to get re-elected. On March 1, 2011, he said he will not hold official pre-election campaign activities.
